A residential septic tank holds between 1,000 and 1,500 gallons of wastewater. Over time, solid waste settles at the bottom and a layer of scum forms on top. When those layers grow thick enough to reach the outlet pipe, untreated sewage starts backing up into the house or surfacing in the yard. Pumping removes the accumulated solids before that happens.
Chase parks the vacuum truck as close to the tank as the access allows and runs a hose from the truck's tank to the opening. The pump pulls solids and liquid out together. On a standard residential tank, the job takes about 30 to 45 minutes once the lid is open. If the lid is buried, digging it out adds time. Chase checks the inlet and outlet baffles while the tank is empty, because that is the only time they are visible.
A household of four on a 1,000-gallon tank should plan on pumping every 3 to 5 years. Larger households, garbage disposals, and high water use shorten the interval. Warning signs that a pump-out is overdue include slow drains throughout the house, sewage smells near the tank or drain field, and standing water in the yard above the tank.
