What to expect when you rent a portable toilet

Renting a portable toilet is straightforward, but a few decisions up front make the difference between a unit that works well for the job and one that creates problems. This guide covers what to expect from the rental process, from placing the order through final pickup.

How many units do you need

The general rule for construction sites is one unit per 10 workers for a standard 8 to 10 hour shift. OSHA requires that workers have access to a toilet within a reasonable walking distance, so large sites may need multiple units spread across the property rather than clustered in one spot.

Events are different. A 4-hour outdoor gathering of 100 people typically needs 4 to 6 units. Events serving food and alcohol need more, because both increase restroom usage. For events lasting a full day or longer, the count goes up further. Reynolds Pumping can help you estimate based on headcount, duration, and the type of gathering.

Choosing the right placement

Three things drive placement: convenience for users, access for the service truck, and ground conditions. Units need to sit on flat, stable ground. Soft or uneven ground can cause a unit to lean or tip. The service truck needs to be able to reach each unit with a hose, so placing them behind a locked gate or across a ditch that the truck cannot cross makes servicing difficult or impossible.

On construction sites, units are usually placed near the site entrance where crews can reach them without crossing active work areas. For events, place them near the main gathering area but not so close that they become the focal point. Downwind from the event, if wind is consistent, is a practical choice.

What comes with the unit

A standard portable restroom from Reynolds Pumping arrives with toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and a ventilation stack. Handwash stations with fresh water, soap, and paper towels are available as a separate add-on. Every unit is delivered clean, fully stocked, and ready to use.

Servicing during the rental

For rentals lasting more than a few days, units need regular servicing. The service visit includes pumping the holding tank, treating it with deodorizer, restocking toilet paper and sanitizer, and cleaning the interior. Construction sites typically run on weekly servicing. High-traffic events may need a mid-event service if the gathering lasts more than one day.

Chase handles servicing himself, on the same schedule as delivery. Missed or delayed servicing is the most common complaint people have about portable toilet rentals from other providers. With Reynolds Pumping, one person handles the whole job, so there is no disconnect between the office and the field.

Pickup at the end

When the job or event is over, call to schedule pickup. Chase collects the unit, pumps the holding tank one final time, and hauls everything out. There is nothing left on site. For construction projects, the rental can be extended or shortened based on the actual timeline.
